Inspiration

As it often does, James Heeley's creative process began with one single ingredient - the rich, complex notes of labdanum concrete: smoky wood, amber, honey, and dates take us back to Phoenicia (1200 BC).

The Phoenicians were one of the first European civilisations to harvest dates, grapes, and produce wine. They were also supreme navigators of the Levantine (eastern and southern Mediterranean). Highly skilled craftsmen and traders of precious metals, textiles, leather, and exotic woods. They invented Tyrian purple - a rare pigment made from crushed seashells, subsequently used to dye the cloaks of Emperors.

Heeley
As a designer influenced by the environment it is natural that James Heeley should be fascinated by the world of scent. It was in France, through his design work and chance encounter with Annick Goutal that the young Englishman discovered the obscure and secret world of perfume and how fragrances are ‘designed’.
With time his beautifully constructed, natural, light scents evolved into more complex creations such as ‘Cardinal’, ‘Cuir Pleine Fleur’ and his more recent collection of ‘Extrait de Parfum’.
As an autodidact, his continually evolving work now contains a varied collection of unique and vibrant scents, each made according to the art of traditional French perfumery.
